For All Faculty Advisers
Faculty advisers are not expected to advise during the summer. If you hear from an advisee over the summer, you may refer them to the Office of Advising (advising.gallatin@nyu.edu).
For Adjunct Faculty Advisers
Adjunct faculty advisers must complete this form to request written pre-authorization for any summer advising work. In order to be compensated for summer advising, adjunct faculty advisers must have received written pre-authorization. Please provide detailed information about the reasons why a particular student requires advising during the summer.
Summer Advising Considerations
- Absent extenuating circumstances, we do not anticipate a need for advisers to work with students on the Rationale/List of Works and Colloquium preparation over the summer. For students who are targeting a Spring graduation, advisers can let students know that summer is a good time for students to work independently on the List of Works and Rationale so they can share their progress with their faculty adviser at the start of the fall semester. You might consider assigning them “summer homework” at the end of the spring semester, using Steve Duncombe’s Annotated Bibliography Summer Homework as a model. However, it should be made clear that this would not be reviewed by an adviser over the summer.
- Students who need to discuss changes to their fall schedules are welcome to reach out to their class advisers (advising.gallatin@nyu.edu) for assistance.
- Students dealing with health and/or wellness issues can connect with Gallatin Student Affairs (studentaffairs.gallatin@nyu.edu) if they are considering a leave of absence for the fall semester.
