Research Statement

The Gallatin Global Fellowship in Urban Practice is based on established partnerships with community-based organizations. Prospective fellows, therefore, must review our list of community partners, research their areas of focus, taking into account both new and existing initiatives.

Please select the community partner that interests you most and tailor your research statement as if you were applying directly to that organization. Your statement should demonstrate that you have researched the organization, and that your skill-set and interests align with the organization’s work and mission, as well as any additional description included. Please note that accepted fellows may be asked to work with a different community partner than the one noted in their research statement. NOTE: You should not contact the community partner directly.

Your Research Statement should be 2-3pp in length and answer the following:

Keeping in mind what the organization is seeking from a Fellow in Urban Practice, submit a research proposal for your summer placement. The proposal may focus on a specific organization, or a broader topic that applies to the work of more than one organization. Start with your academic grounding in the topic, and highlight the skills you can offer to the organization. How will the organization, or the mission of this effort benefit from your perspective? What research have you done on this or related topics in the past? How might you reflect upon your own positionality in relationship to the research and/or community with which you will be engaging?

One file only.
5 MB limit.
Allowed types: pdf, doc, docx.

Recommendation Letters

You will need two letters of recommendation, one from your adviser and one from a faculty member who can speak to your academic strengths; knowledge of urban theory, research, or history, if any; and your ability to work independently.  Please list their names and contact information below. Upon submission of your application, they will receive an email with a link to a form where they will upload their recommendation letter.
