Temporary, Part-time Archivist/Project Manager Position
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University is recruiting for an temporary archivist/project manager to develop an archive of the history of the school for a part-time, estimated six month engagement.
- The Archivist will conceive and design, in collaboration with school leadership, the Gallatin Historical Archive (GHA).
- They will lead all aspects of collection development and collection care for the GHA.
- The Archivist will oversee collection development decisions based on knowledge of the history of Gallatin and NYU, awareness of archival standards and trends, and understanding of user needs.
- The Archivist will be responsible for processing collections to archival standards, including the creation of modes of intellectual access to collections.
- The Archivist is also responsible for initiating and participating in outreach, reference, and collection development activities, including interviews.
- The Archivist will be responsible for recommending digital archiving platforms and standards and will work with staff to digitize assets where possible and recommended.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Conceives and designs, in collaboration with school leadership, the Gallatin Historical Archive.
- Initiates and perpetuates collection development by maintaining and cultivating relationships, conducting field surveys, appraising potential collections, and acquiring/accessioning assets.
- Conducts oral history sessions as needed.
- Serves as the key coordinator of archival processing, works with other staff on processing, and helps determine processing priorities, including the archiving of digital material.
- Provides access to archival collections by creating finding aids, collection-level records, and metadata descriptions and maintains a database on collections and storage space allocations.
Qualifications
Education: A Masters in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program (or equivalent) or a graduate degree in history (or related discipline) is preferred.
Experience: Experience in processing archival collections, including experience in arrangement, description, and online access is required. Experience with other aspects of archival work, including research assistance, outreach, and collection care, is required.
Skills: Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required. Familiarity with various computer applications, as well as archival and metadata standards, is required. Knowledge of a wide range of collection formats, including manuscript collections, organizational records, digital holdings, and artifacts is required. Supervisory experience is preferred.
Pay Rate
$50-$65 per hour, based on experience
